Anthony G. Christodoulou, PhD, FSCMR is an Associate Professor of Radiology, Bioengineering, and Physics & Biology in Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Previously, he was Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences and the Director of Magnetic Resonance Technology Innovations for the Biomedical Imaging Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC).
Prof. Christodoulou’s research laboratory develops and translates novel CMR techniques through innovations in MR physics, machine learning, and image reconstruction. His group’s primary focus is on multidimensional quantitative imaging methods for the diagnosis, risk prediction, and treatment monitoring of cardiovascular diseases.
His work on 4D cardiovascular MR (CMR) received the best paper award at the 2011 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference. His work on multidimensional quantitative cardiovascular imaging, dubbed “MR Multitasking”, received the 2016 Society for Magnetic Resonance Angiography (SMRA) E. James Potchen Award for Best Oral Presentation, was a finalist for the 2017 Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) Early Career Award, and received the 2018 SCMR Clinical Seed Grant Award. He received the Teaching Award from the Cedars-Sinai Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 2024.
His trainees have also earned several awards, including International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) Merit Awards at the Summa Cum Laude level (3x: 2021) and Magna Cum Laude level (4x: 2019 to 2025), the SCMR Early Career Award (finalist 2022; winner 2022), the OCSMRM Young Investigator Award (winner 2023), and the SMRA Potchen–Passariello Award for Best Abstract (finalist 2024; winner 2025).
Dr. Christodoulou is a Fellow of the SCMR, a member of its Program Committee, and previously served on the Science Committee from 2023 to 2025. He has been an Executive Board member of the SMRA since 2021, co-chaired the society’s 2020 annual meeting program, and currently serves as Treasurer. For the ISMRM, he sits on the Young Investigator Awards Subcommittee and on the Editorial Board of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and is Vice-Chair of the Cardiac MR Study Group Governing Committee; he previously served on the Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC) from 2020 to 2023, including contributing as Education Co-Chair for Image Acquisition & Analysis and Scientific Chair for Quantitative Imaging in 2022-2023. He is a member of the IEEE and the American Heart Association (AHA).
