Professor
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
Chicago, Illinois, United States
Dr. Markl serves as the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Radiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He also holds the Lester B. and Frances T. Knight Professorship of Cardiac Imaging in the Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Freiburg, Germany, in 2000, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Lucas MRI/S Center at Stanford University’s Department of Radiology from 2001 to 2004. He then returned to the University Hospital in Freiburg, where he led Cardiovascular MRI before joining the Northwestern faculty in Radiology and Biomedical Engineering in 2011.
Dr. Markl's research has significantly advanced the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease. His work focuses on developing innovative imaging techniques to assess cardiac structure, function, and hemodynamics, as well as uncovering mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease and stroke. Internationally recognized as a pioneer in 4D flow MRI, his contributions have enhanced both scientific understanding and patient care.
Dr. Markl is a recipient of the RSNA Research Trainee Prize, the I.I. Rabi Award Young Investigator Award of the ISMRM, and the Distinguished Investigator Award of the Academy of Radiology Research. He serves an Associate Editor for 'Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging’, is a Fellow of the ISMRM and SCMR, a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees and is the Past-President of the SCMR and the SMRA
