Gerry McCann is Professor of Cardiac Imaging/Honorary Consultant Cardiologist and National Insitiute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator at the University of Leicester, UK. He leads the Cardiovascular theme of the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre and is a theme lead for the newly awarded BHF Leicester Centre of Research Excellence.
Gerry undetook his CMR fellowship at the VUMC, Amsterdam in 2004 and was a also full-time NHS consultant cardiologist before undertaking 3 successive NIHR research fellowships/professorship since 2011. He now directs a very active clinical imaging research programme with funding from the British Heart Foundation, MRC and the NIHR.
Gerry is an experienced clinical triallist and has been a co-investiagtor on most of the largest CMR trials in coronary disease including CE-MARC2, CE-MARC3, MR-INFORM and GADACAD 1 as well as numerous efficacy phase trials in Myocardial Infarction, diabetic heart disease and heart failure. He co-chaired (2012-18), then chaired (2018-21) the British Scociety of MR Research Group which was formed to promote multicentre studies. Gerry also leads the pragmatic, International EASY AS randomised cntrolled trial which is the largest ever study assessing aortic valve replacement in asymptomatic patienets with Aortic Stenosis.
Gerry has numerous national and international collaborations working on coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, heart failure and an interest in atrial fibrillation in veteran athletes. He has an excellent track record in building research capacity and has undertaken extensive leadership and mentoring training.
