Dr. Wintersperger is Professor of Radiology at the Department of Medical Imaging, University of Toronto and also serves as Associate Vice-Chair Research (Heart-Lung-Vessel).
He is the Director of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and the Director of Cardiac Imaging Operations of the Toronto Joined Department of Medical Imaging (JDMI) at the University Health Network, Sinai Health System and Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. He is also appointed as adjunct Professor of Radiology at the University of Munich.
Dr. Wintersperger graduated from the University of Munich, Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and received his specialty training in Radiology as well as his fellowship training at the Department of Clinical Radiology at the University of Munich. Dr. Wintersperger received his doctorate (Dr. med.) in 1998 (‘Diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in spiral CT’) and his ‘Venia Legendi’ (PD. Dr. med; Habilitation/PhD equivalent) in 2007 focusing on ‘Use of parallel imaging techniques in analysis of cardiac function using cine MRI: Technical optimization and clinical evaluation.’ Until May 2010 he served as Section Chief General Radiology & Cardiac MRI as well as the Head of Quality Management at the Department of Clinical Radiology at the University of Munich. In 2010 Dr. Wintersperger joined the University of Toronto and the Toronto Joint Department of Medical Imaging as staff radiologist overseeing the departments cardiac imaging program. As part of the Peter Munk Cardiac centre, JDMI currently performs ~3800 Cardiac MRI and ~2000 Cardiac CT examinations per year.
Dr. Wintersperger is actively involved as a member of various societies including administrative positions. He is a member of the CVRI Council of the American Heart Association (AHA) leadership committee and the immediate past chair of the AHA joined Cardiac Imaging Committee. Dr. Wintersperger also serves as a member of the RSNA Cardiac Scientific Subcommittee and the ISMRM Annual Meeting Program Committee. Furthermore, he is a continuing member of the educational/refresher-course faculty for the RSNA, ISMRM and other society meetings. Dr. Wintersperger is on the reviewer panel of various radiology and cardiology journals, is a member of the Editorial Board for Investigative Radiology and is the responsible Associate Editor for all Cardiac Radiology Submissions of Investigative Radiology.
Dr. Wintersperger’s research interest mainly focuses on non-invasive cardiovascular CT and MR imaging with special emphasis on quantitative methods, quantitative tissue characterization and innovative accelerated imaging methods. Other aspects involve cardiovascular MRI at high-field strength (3T) and clinical applications of novel contrast agents. Recent work included the development of new quantitative algorithms and new approaches in Cardiac Relaxometry. Dr. Wintersperger has > 160 PubMed listed publications.
