Assistant Professor
Departamento de Informática, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María
Santiago, Region Metropolitana, Chile
Julio Sotelo is a Professor in the Department of Informatics at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María in Santiago, Chile. He also serves as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences at Monash University, Australia, and is a Principal Investigator at the Millennium Institute for Intelligent Healthcare Engineering (iHEALTH).
Dr. Sotelo possesses a multidisciplinary academic background that seamlessly integrates engineering with data science. He began his career at the Universidad de Valparaíso, where he earned his degree in Civil Biomedical Engineering (2009) and a Master of Engineering Sciences specializing in Biomedical Engineering (2011). In 2016, he obtained his PhD and Master of Engineering Sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Sotelo completed a four-year postdoctoral fellowship (2016–2020) at PUC’s Biomedical Imaging Center (CIB) and the Department of Electrical Engineering. During this tenure, he also served as a researcher at the Millennium Nucleus CardioMR, focusing on the intersection of medical technology and clinical research. To further expand his technical expertise, he earned a Master of Data Science from the Universidad del Desarrollo in 2022.
His primary research interests include biomedical image processing, cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biomechanics. Over the past 12 years, he has developed several numerical methods for extracting quantitative information from 4D Flow MRI data, with a dedicated focus on accelerating the clinical translation of these developments. He has participated in numerous high-impact projects related to cardiovascular MRI, including 4D Flow MRI, cardiac strain quantification, and cardiovascular mechanics. Additionally, Dr. Sotelo serves as a reviewer for several leading international journals and is an active member of prestigious scientific societies, including the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) and the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM).
