Professor
University of Pennsylvania
PHILADELPHIA , Pennsylvania, United States
Dr. Mark Fogel has been working in the field of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), ventricular function, blood flow and tissue characterization in congenital heart disease since 1990. He is presently Professor of Pediatrics (Cardiology) and Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and is Director of CMR at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is a graduate of MIT in Applied Mathematics, doing his pediatric training at Yale and his pediatric cardiology fellowship at CHOP. Dr. Fogel has lectured nationally and internationally on these topics and has published over 240 manuscripts nearly all involving CMR, written over 33 book chapters (again, nearly all about CMR) and won young investigator awards from the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has edited 2 textbooks, one on CMR and the other on ventricular function and blood flow. He was the lead organizer and first author of a guidelines paper on CMR in pediatric congenital and acquired heart disease with SCMR as the lead organization.
Dr Fogel, a master of SCMR, has been a member of organization since 2000 and served for 4 years on the Board of Trustees from 2008-2011. He founded the Pediatric/Congenital CMR special interest group and was the chairman of that group for 11 years before stepping down. He successfully lobbied for pediatric/congenital interests including obtaining dedicated sessions at the annual scientific meetings and served to organize these sessions for 4 years. In addition, he has been active in advocating for CMR in general worldwide with both industry and government, representing SCMR to the FDA and the NIH on numerous panels. He served as assistant editor and pediatric editor to JCMR from 2001-2008 and served on the editorial board of JCMR. Finally, over the years, Dr Fogel has been active on other SCMR committees such as the US Working Group which he is on now and the Clinical Trials Committee.
Mark has served on the Board of Scientific Counselors of NHLBI of NIH for 4 years and was an imaging consultant to the FDA. Dr. Fogel has served on the editorial boards of the JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging and Congenital Heart Disease and currently serves on the editorial board of Cardiovascular Engineering and Technology in addition to JCMR. Dr. Fogel has served on numerous national imaging committees such as the ACC Imaging Council and was the Cardiovascular Disease in the Young Representative to the Radiology Cardiac Imaging Committee of the AHA for 4 years. He is currently funded by the NIH as the principal investigator of an RO1 in single ventricle research using CMR and 2 Additional Ventures grants on single ventricles using CMR after having two previous RO1s, an R34 and having been co-investigator on a Bioengineering Research Partnership as well as 2 other RO1s. He has also been funded in the past by AHA, AAP, Cooley’s Anemia Foundation and Edwards Life Sciences.
