Juliano de Lara Fernandes obtained his Medical Degree from the State University of Campinas Medical School, Campinas, Brazil, in 1998 and continued his residency at the Department of Internal Medicine. Between 2000 and 2003, he completed a cardiology fellowship and received his PhD degree from the University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.
After completing his training in cardiology, Dr Fernandes concluded a one-year fellowship in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Computed Tomography at the Heart Institute, University of São Paulo. He began working with both methods in 2004 at Radiologia Clínica de Campinas and at the State University of Campinas, where he held a position of Research Physician in the Department of Internal Medicine before founding and coordinating the new Jose Michel Kalaf Research Institute in 2005, dedicated to the research of Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging. In the same year, an MBA in Health Administration from Fundação Getulio Vargas, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was received.
The main areas of research include MRI parametric mapping with emphasis on T2* analysis and iron overload studies, coronary artery disease diagnosis with CMR and CCT as well as new developments that allow faster, more efficient imaging. Dr Fernandes is a regular contributor to and member of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR), Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT), North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging, Interamerican Society of Cardiology and the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), currently finishing a two-year role as Vice-President for CMR in the SBC Cardiovascular Imaging Department. In SCMR, Dr Fernandes was actively involved in many sections of the Society since 2004, including establishing the Latin American Working Group, participating in the Web Committee, being in the Editorial Board for the JCMR and acting as the Abstract Chair for the 2017 Annual Meeting and Program Co-Chair in CMR2018.
Having the goal of disseminating and implementing cardiovascular MRI worldwide, Dr Fernandes has participated in the training of more than 55 centers across 26 countries in the world, working with different organizations and research partners. He has authored and co-authored 52 manuscripts in peer-reviewed indexed journals, including JCMR, Blood, Circulation, JAHA, Haematologica, Radiology, Atherosclerosis, the American Journal of Cardiology, the International Journal of Cardiology and European Radiology (http://www.researcherid.com/rid/C-7366-2012). He was also the Editor of the textbook “Cardiovascular MRI and CT” published in Portuguese and coordinated two Brazilian National Guidelines on CMR and CCT while establishing strong advocacy policies to foster the acceptance and reimbursement of CMR in the country.
