Dr. Marcelo Souto Nacif is a board-certified radiologist specializing in Cardiovascular Imaging, with extensive experience in cardiac MRI and cardiac CT.
He completed his residency training in Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging in 2004 and subsequently earned both his Master’s and PhD degrees at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 2009. His graduate research focused on cardiovascular MRI, including renal artery assessment using MR angiography, as well as stress cardiac MRI and the evaluation of cardiomyopathies. Dr. Nacif served as a faculty member at Fluminense Federal University (UFF) until 2024.
From 2010 to 2013, Dr. Nacif served as a Postdoctoral Visiting Fellow in the Department of Radiology at the NIH Clinical Center and as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he investigated myocardial interstitial fibrosis using CMR and conducted population-based studies using large datasets, including the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis).
Dr. Nacif has authored ten books, more than 42 book chapters, and has delivered over 170 scientific presentations at national and international conferences. He is also an inventor on an NIH patent (HHS Reference No. E-267-2011/0) related to the quantification of myocardial fibrosis using cardiac computed tomography: “Low-dose Cardiac Computed Tomography Method for Whole Heart Extracellular Volume.”
He serves on the Editorial Board of Radiologia Brasileira, the official journal of the Brazilian College of Radiology (CBR), and is a coordinator of the Cardiovascular Imaging Section of the São Paulo Society of Radiology (SPR).
He currently directs high-volume clinical cardiovascular imaging services, with a weekly volume of approximately 100 cardiac MRI and 120 cardiac CT examinations. In addition, he serves as Regional Medical Coordinator of Diagnostic Support Services for three of Brazil’s leading national healthcare networks. His clinical and research interests focus on myocardial tissue characterization and quantitative cardiovascular imaging.
