Maria-Luiza Luchian, MD, PhD
Cardiologist | Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Cardiovascular Innovation Research Center (CIRC), Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute (HVTI), Cleveland Clinic
Dr. Maria-Luiza Luchian is a cardiologist and post-doctoral research fellow specializing in multimodality cardiovascular imaging, with a primary focus on cardiac magnetic resonance. At the Cardiovascular Innovation Research Center within the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, her research centers on cardiomyopathies—with a particular emphasis on non-ischemic cardiomyopathies and valvular heart diseases, exploring how advanced imaging can refine diagnosis, risk stratification, and therapeutic guidance.
Before joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Luchian served as Staff Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Namur (CHU UCLouvain Mont-Godinne) in Belgium, where she led the echocardiography laboratory and supervised imaging for structural-heart interventions, including LAA and PFO and paravalvular leak closures. She also directed stress and transesophageal echocardiography and was responsible for imaging education and mentorship of junior cardiologists.
She held an academic appointment as Chargée de cours cliniques (Professor) at Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, teaching cardiorespiratory semiology and clinical case analysis. Dr. Luchian earned her PhD in Medical Sciences from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where her thesis investigated the cardiovascular impact of COVID-19 and the role of multimodality imaging in detecting subclinical myocardial dysfunction.
Her research portfolio spans topics including left atrial strain, cardiac amyloidosis, advanced echo-CMR quantification in non-inschemic cardiomyaopthy, and cardio-oncology imaging integration.
Dr. Luchian has been actively involved in several professional societies. She serves as a Board Member of the Belgian Working Group of Non-Invasive Cardiac Imaging (BWGNICI) and as a Committee Member of the Heart Imagers of Tomorrow within the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI). She also co-organized the JWIC – Walloon Cardiac Imaging Day, a national meeting dedicated to advancing multimodal imaging practice in Belgium.
Dr. Luchian’s long-term goal is to contribute to the next generation of cardiac multimodality imaging standards, promoting translational research and innovative imaging strategies that enhance patient-specific cardiovascular care.
