Assistant Physician in Cardiology
Vivantes Klinikum in Friedrichshain
Berlin, Berlin, Germany
Dr Katharina Wosgien is a cardiology resident currently in her sixth year of postgraduate training, with a growing specialization in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). She began her medical career in August 2020 and has since developed a strong clinical and academic interest in advanced cardiac imaging, particularly its role in the diagnosis and management of cardiomyopathies.
Working in a high-volume tertiary care environment, she has gained extensive experience in general cardiology, echocardiography, and acute cardiac care. Early exposure to complex cardiac cases fostered her interest in non-invasive imaging—especially CMR—as a powerful tool to integrate structural, functional, and tissue-characterization data for precise clinical decision-making.
She completed her Level 1 CMR certification in early 2023, which provided the foundation for more advanced training. Building on this, she is currently enrolled in a Level 2 CMR program at the Helios Klinikum Berlin-Buch under the mentorship of Prof. Schulz-Menger. The program combines a month of in-person training with two months of structured online case-based learning, offering comprehensive exposure to a broad spectrum of CMR indications. Her clinical work includes systematic evaluation of ventricular function, ischemia assessment, myocarditis, infiltrative and genetic cardiomyopathies, and congenital heart disease.
Her academic and clinical focus lies in using CMR to enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve risk stratification in cardiomyopathy patients. She has worked on several case-based presentations for national cardiology meetings, including topics such as arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and lamin-associated cardiac disease. Through these experiences, she has cultivated a particular interest in tissue characterization techniques—late gadolinium enhancement, parametric mapping, and strain analysis—and their implications for patient management.
She aims to pursue Level 3 CMR certification in the near future to further strengthen her expertise and contribute to the integration of advanced imaging into routine clinical pathways. Her long-term goals include combining clinical work with imaging-based research, supporting multidisciplinary care, and promoting high-quality CMR training for young cardiologists.
