Masaki Kodaira, MD, PhD is a board-certified cardiologist and physician-scientist specializing in adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and cardiovascular epidemiology. He graduated from Keio University School of Medicine and began his career as a clinical cardiologist, earning board certification from the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine. In 2011, he began cardiology fellowship training at Keio University Hospital and became a board-certified member of the Japanese Circulation Society in 2014.
Dr. Kodaira’s clinical interests evolved toward ACHD and large-scale cardiovascular data analysis. He has conducted research on percutaneous coronary intervention outcomes and comparative studies of treatment strategies for atrial septal defects, including transcatheter versus minimally invasive surgical approaches.
In 2020, he began a two-year Clinical Fellowship in ACHD at McGill University’s MAUDE Unit under Dr. Judith Therrien. This intensive, hands-on program included the management of over 800 outpatients and 100 inpatients, more than 40 cardiac catheterizations, 300 transthoracic echocardiograms, and 150 cardiac MRI interpretations. During this time, he also collaborated with Dr. Ariane Marelli on epidemiological research using the Quebec-wide ACHD database and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) Discharge Abstract Database. Together, they developed the Canadian CHD (CanCHD) database, comprising nearly 500,000 patients with congenital heart disease followed over 35 years.
His primary research focused on the incidence and cardiovascular impact of influenza-related hospitalizations in the ACHD population. Using Cox regression and time-dependent hazard modeling, he demonstrated a significantly elevated risk of cardiovascular complications in the months following influenza infection. This work was presented at the 31st International Symposium on ACHD and the Japanese Adult Congenital Heart Disease Society, and was published in the *American Heart Journal*.
Dr. Kodaira also contributed to the development of a multidisciplinary aortopathy clinic, co-authoring a publication in the *Canadian Journal of Cardiology Open* that outlined the McGill model for integrated care. Upon returning to Keio University Hospital, he resumed his role in ACHD care and research, helping to expand the program and establish a dedicated cardiac MRI service for congenital heart disease.
Currently, he is leading research on the use of 3D printing and virtual reality (VR) for ACHD patient education, supported by two research grants. He recently presented clinical experience with the Impella ventricular assist device in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) at the 8th World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. In collaboration with national ACHD experts and statisticians, he is also analyzing the impact of geographic access to ACHD centers on cardiovascular outcomes using Japan’s JROAD-DPC administrative database.
Through his clinical expertise, data-driven research, and commitment to innovation, Dr. Masaki Kodaira is dedicated to advancing the care and understanding of ACHD both in Japan and globally.
