Dr. Wolfgang Rehwald is a leading expert in the technical and clinical dimensions of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. He serves as an embedded scientist with the Siemens Healthineers MR Collaborations Team and is based at the Duke Cardiovascular MR Center at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
Dr. Rehwald earned his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Controls from the Technical University of Darmstadt, one of Germany’s premier engineering institutions. He later moved to the United States to pursue doctoral studies in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. There, he joined the CMR laboratory of Drs. Robert Judd and Raymond Kim, marking a pivotal shift in his career toward medical imaging. He completed his PhD with a specialization in cardiac MRI.
His scientific interests center on cardiac morphology and tissue characterization, including bright- and black-blood delayed enhancement techniques. He is dedicated to advancing image quality—particularly in challenging patient populations—by focusing on practical, streamlined solutions. Dr. Rehwald enjoys pulse sequence development, image reconstruction programming, data acquisition, and scientific writing. His research has been published in leading international journals such as Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Radiology, and Nature Medicine.
Outside of work, Wolfgang and his partner spend time with their flock of parrots. He enjoys nature, gardening, hands-on repair, and carpentry. As a dual citizen of the United States and Germany, he appreciates and relates to diverse cultures and perspectives.
