James Carr, MD, is Chair of Radiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Radiologist in Chief at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Group. He is the Frederick John Bradd and William Kennedy Professor of Radiology and Professor of Radiology, Medicine & Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. He earned his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Radiology in Dublin, Ireland and fellowship training in Cardiovascular MRI and Interventional Radiology at Northwestern University. He served as vice chair for Research in Radiology (2012-2019) and also was director of the division of Cardiovascular Imaging in Radiology (2004-2021). He has directed dedicated fellowship programs in cardiovascular imaging and clinical/research MRI, for which he has mentored over 90 clinical and research fellows at Northwestern University. He has served on national, international and institutional committees related to research and education, including those of the American Heart Association, the American College of Radiology, the Society of Cardiovascular MR, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
He is a past president of both the Society for Magnetic Resonance Angiography (SMRA) and the Society for Cardiovascular MRI (SCMR). He has delivered over 240 invited presentations on cardiovascular MRI in the U.S. and around the world. Dr. Carr has been principal investigator or co‐investigator on multiple industry and national institute of health grants. His research focuses on the development and clinical evaluation of techniques for cardiac and vascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He has authored or co‐authored over 340 publications on cardiovascular imaging, with specific focus on time‐resolved MRA, ultrafast cardiac MRI techniques, mapping and myocardial function including authorship on the appropriateness criteria for cardiac MRI in JACC.
