Nuno Bettencourt, MD, PhD, FESC, FACC, FSCCT, FSCMR
Dr. Nuno Bettencourt is a Portuguese Consultant Cardiologist specializing in cardiovascular imaging, with expertise in cardiac CT and MRI. He serves as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, where he coordinates the Imaging Module of the PhD Program in Cardiovascular Sciences.
He is a member of the Faculty’s Cardiovascular R&D Unit, where he leads a research line dedicated to cardiovascular imaging, and is also affiliated with the Center for Research in Health Technologies and Information Systems.
Dr. Bettencourt earned his PhD in 2014 with the thesis “Optimizing Myocardial Ischemia Detection Using Advanced Cardiac Imaging”, following a Master’s degree in Molecular Medicine (2009). He also holds postgraduate diplomas in Sports Medicine (2002) and Forensic Medicine (1999), and graduated in Medicine in 1997.
Since 2006, he has been practicing as a consultant cardiologist and currently oversees three cardiovascular MR and CT programs. He gained international experience in cardiac CT and MRI at Mount Sinai Hospital (New York, USA) and the Division of Imaging Sciences at King’s College London, where he also served as an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (London, UK) from 2008 to 2010.
Dr. Bettencourt holds Level III certification in both cardiac CT and CMR and is the national coordinator of the Portuguese Registry of Non-Ultrasonic Cardiac Imaging. He has authored over 300 scientific communications presented at national and international conferences and more than 150 peer-reviewed publications in indexed journals (h-index: 36; i10-index: 81).
