Dr. Clerio Azevedo earned his medical degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1998, followed by residency in internal medicine and fellowship in clinical cardiology. Since early in his career, his research has focused on Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) and Coronary Computed Tomographic Angiography (CCTA).
He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital (2003–2004) under the mentorship of Dr. João A. C. Lima, where his work centered on the use of CMR for tissue characterization and risk stratification in acute myocardial infarction. Dr. Azevedo obtained his PhD from the Heart Institute (InCor) of the University of São Paulo Medical School in 2009 and later served as Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), expanding his research into non-ischemic cardiomyopathies and valvular heart disease.
In 2017, he joined the Duke Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Center (DCMRC) and is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Duke University Medical Center.
